Girls Want to Have Fun Coding!

Empowering girls to explore technology, creativity, and innovation through storytelling, digital education, and role models from the STEAM world.

Hackatons

The CodingGirl hackathons were organised in each partner country following a common methodology developed under WP2. Their main aim was to support teachers and educators in designing innovative lesson plans and IT/STEAM activities that motivate girls to explore coding and digital creativity.

Each hackathon gathered mixed teams of teachers, educators, and IT/STEAM representatives. Participants were guided by mentors and worked in teams of up to five members to develop practical lesson plans integrating microbit programming, creation of mobile widgets, creation of online games, graphic design and 3D printing with real-life topics such as Health, Nutrition, Safety, Environmental Awareness, and Lifestyle.

Events started with an introduction to the CodingGirl project and its objectives, followed by presentations of the hackathon rules, evaluation criteria, and templates for lesson plans. After team formation, participants had several hours to design and present their educational projects. The activities combined brainstorming, teamwork, and mentoring support, while final presentations were evaluated by a jury based on innovation, gender inclusion, pedagogical value, and technical feasibility.

The hackathons produced > 25 lesson plans across the consortium, which integrate coding and STEAM principles into everyday classroom practice. All lesson plans were refined, translated into English, and compiled into the CodingGirl Compendium, serving as an open resource for teachers.

Participants’ feedback confirmed high satisfaction with the collaborative format, mentoring, and creative learning environment. The hackathons successfully demonstrated how practical teamwork and digital tools can inspire teachers to engage girls in STEAM education.
